Cooking class in Syracuse: which one to book, and is the market visit worth it?

Book the four-hour class at €129 if you want the market, a chef and a lunch you have cooked yourself. Book the three-hour class at €115 if the view of the Greek Theatre matters more than the market, or if you need a gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or lactose-free menu. Both are rated 4.8 or higher by around 180 people. There is a third class, a version of the second with an early market start, but it has only five reviews.

The €129 class: market first, then the chef’s kitchen

You meet in Ortigia and walk into the market with the chef to buy the ingredients. Then you go to the chef’s kitchen to cook, and you eat the result for lunch. The booking page lists a guided visit to the market, the local chef, the class, lunch and a transfer from the market to the kitchen if needed. The group is limited to eight, and the instructor speaks Italian and English.

Two details matter. The first is the market: the page says it is closed on Sundays, and that on such a day the chef guides you through the streets of the island to buy local products instead. That is a fair fallback, but it is a different morning. The second is the menu. The page says food and drinks are organised by the chef, and it does not list dishes or diet options, so tell the operator about any restriction when you book.

The €115 class: a home kitchen with a view

This class takes place in the host’s home, with a view of the ancient Greek Theatre. You prepare a menu of two courses and a traditional dessert from seasonal ingredients, and then eat it with local wine. The listing says the menu can be made gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or lactose-free, and that dietary needs must be communicated in advance. The group is up to 12, and the host speaks English, Italian and Spanish.

The booking page of this class does not mention a market visit. One recent reviewer describes going to the markets beforehand, so it may happen, but ask the operator if the market is the reason you want to book. If it is, take one of the other two.

The third class: the early market, and few reviews

The same host also runs a four-hour version for €120. It starts early in the morning at the Ortigia market, when the stalls have just opened, and then goes to the host’s home to cook three dishes: a starter, fresh or dry pasta with a seasonal sauce, and a dessert. It is limited to ten people and includes a drink and a digital recipe book. The listing gives Spanish and English as the instructor languages, and the description adds Italian, so check which one applies to your date. It has a 5.0 rating from five reviews, which means it is promising and untested. The listings also hold three more cooking offers at €145 to €150, each with at most six reviews; they are not compared here.

What to know before you choose

You are eating your lunch. All three classes end with the meal you made, so do not plan another one. The €129 class is the longest at four hours.

Starting times are shown on the booking page when you check a date, not in the listing. Book with the time in mind: the market is a morning affair, so a class that begins there has to begin early.

Cancellation. The three pages show free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

Small groups. Eight, ten and twelve are the limits.

Which one for whom

You want the market and the full experience: the €129 class.

You want the view and a clear menu, including special diets: the €115 class.

You are a morning person and happy to book a newer class: the €120 class.

You want to eat well but not cook: the Ortigia street food tours are shorter and start at €49.90.

If you would rather see the market on your own first, read Ortigia on your own. All food experiences are on the food and wine tours in Syracuse page, and the Greek Theatre itself is covered in the guide to the Neapolis Archaeological Park.
