Neapolis Archaeological Park in Syracuse: ticket or guided tour?
Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read
Take the guided tour if you want to understand what you are looking at, and buy the park ticket alone if you only want to see it. The Neapolis Archaeological Park is the main ancient site in Syracuse, and it is mostly ruins and rock: without someone to explain it, the Greek Theatre looks like steps and the quarries look like holes. The most reviewed tour is €22.50 per person and lasts 90 to 105 minutes.
What is inside the park
The park holds the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, the quarries of the Latomia del Paradiso and, in them, the cave called the Ear of Dionysius. The Ear is the one everybody asks about. It is a tall, narrow artificial cave with a remarkable echo, and the legend is that the tyrant Dionysius listened from outside to the words of the prisoners held within.
It is on the mainland, a little way from Ortigia, so plan it as its own half day, separate from the island.
Three practical points before you go
Heat. The site is open and has little shade. In summer, go as early as the park allows and take water. The tours below last up to two hours, which is a good amount at midday and a long one.
Tickets. The entrance price and the opening hours are set by the park and change over time, so check the official site on the day you plan to go. Whether the entrance fee is included in a tour price is stated on each booking page, in the part that lists what is included. Read it before you book: the short description of each tour does not say.
The theatre in spring. The Greek Theatre is used for performances, and parts of it can be closed to visitors around them. If the theatre is the reason you are going, check that it is open on your day.
The tours compared
| Tour | Price | Length | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neapolis Archaeological Park Small Group Tour | €22.50 per person | 90 to 105 minutes | 4.7 stars, 472 reviews |
| Neapolis and Greek Theater guided tour | €29.90 per person | 2 hours | 4.5 stars, 300 reviews |
| Greek Theater and Neapolis sunset tour | €29.90 per person | 1.5 hours | 4.8 stars, 23 reviews |
| Ortigia and Neapolis Guided Walking Tour | €360 per group of up to 4 | 3 hours | 4.5 stars, 226 reviews |
The €22.50 small-group tour is the default choice. It names the ancient theatre, the Ear of Dionysius and the story of the most important Greek colonies, and the booking page offers it as a shared group or a private tour. It has the most reviews and the second-best rating.
The €29.90 two-hour tour costs €7.40 more. It is described as a guided tour of the Neapolis and the Greek Theatre, and it is rated lower than the cheaper one, 4.5 against 4.7. The extra 15 to 30 minutes are the only clear advantage.
The sunset tour at €29.90 is the one to look at if the heat is your problem, since it runs later in the day. Be careful with its 4.8 stars: they come from 23 reviews, which is too few to compare with the others.
The €360 tour combines the park with a walk through Ortigia in three hours, for a group of up to four people. Divided by four it is €90 each, which makes it a private-style option, not a budget one. It is rated 4.5 from 226 reviews.
Skip the hop-on bus for this
A hop-on hop-off bus passes the archaeological park, and costs €10, but its rating is the lowest in this guide, 3.1 stars from 227 reviews. If the park matters to you, the guided tour is a better use of the morning.
Who should do what
You love ruins, or have an hour to spare: the park ticket, water and a hat.
You want the story: the €22.50 small-group tour.
You will be there in July or August: the earliest slot you can get, or the sunset tour.
You want old and new in one go: the €360 tour for four, or the €22.50 tour in the morning and Ortigia on your own in the afternoon.
The Greek, Roman and archaeological tours are listed under Neapolis Archaeological Park tours.
