Which Ortigia sea cave boat tour is worth booking from Syracuse?
Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read
Book the one-hour boat tour for €20 if you want to see the sea caves of Ortigia and be back for lunch. Book a two-hour trip for €40 or more if you want to swim. The short tour is the most popular boat trip in Syracuse by a wide margin: 4.7 stars from 3,095 reviews, with the next most reviewed boat tour at 1,145. But the short tours are about looking, and the longer ones are about the water.
What all the boat tours have in common
Every tour in this list starts in Syracuse and goes around the island of Ortigia, and six of the seven go to its sea caves. One booking page places the caves on the north side of the city and describes them as peculiarly shaped, and one of the longer tours adds a heart-shaped cave and a view of the Arethusa spring from the water. From the boat you also see the Castello Maniace at the southern tip of the island.
What the listings do not say is how far a boat goes into a cave. That depends on the sea on the day, and on the skipper. Treat the caves as a reason to go, not as a guarantee of a particular view, and check the cancellation terms on the booking page, because boat trips can be called off when the sea is rough.

The short tours: €20 for the caves and nothing else
The two most reviewed short tours do what they say. One lasts one to one and a half hours, the other one hour. The second one’s booking page promises a local skipper, time to relax, take photos and see Syracuse from the sea. That is the offer; neither listing mentions a swim or food.
Pick one of these if you have a morning, a modest budget and no wish to get wet. The difference between the two is small, and the better test is which departure time fits your day.
A few small variations sit at the same price. The glass-bottom boat, also €20, has an expert guide on board with commentary on the monuments and gives you the option to swim, with prosecco included. It has the highest rating in the table, 4.8, but from far fewer reviews than the two classics.
When the longer trip is worth it
Swimming is the reason to pay more. Captain Mirko’s tour at €30 adds snorkelling in the clear water. It has more than 1,100 reviews and the same 4.7 stars as the short tours, which is the strongest case in the table for paying €10 extra.
The two-hour trips at €40 and €48.50 go further. The €40 one enters the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area at the Pillirina bay for a swim and snorkel, and the €48.50 one includes fruit and prosecco and a swim. If the water is what you want, read our guide to Pillirina and Plemmirio by boat before you choose between them.
The semi-submarine
The semi-submersible has large windows below the waterline, so you see the sea beneath the boat as well as the coast. It is the most unusual option here and the most expensive of the one-hour tours at €35 for 75 minutes. The rating is lower, 4.4 stars from 84 reviews, so it suits people who are curious about the format, not people who want the highest-rated experience.
Who should skip the boat tour
If you get seasick easily, even a short tour in a small boat may be uncomfortable. Ask your pharmacist before the trip, not the skipper on the quay. If you have difficulty with steps or a narrow gangway, ask the operator before you book whether boarding works for you. The listings do not say.
Which one for whom
First visit, one free morning: the €20 tour with 3,095 reviews.
You want to swim: Captain Mirko at €30, or a two-hour trip if you want a proper stop.
Evening light and a drink: the sunset cruise with an aperitif is a different trip, and has its own page.
You would rather walk the island than see it from the water: read Ortigia on your own first.
