Do you need a hire car in Syracuse?

Updated October 23, 2026 · 5 min read

Compact cars parked beside pale stone buildings on a Sicilian street

For Ortigia and central Syracuse, you do not need a car. For Noto alone, public transport can be enough. Hire one when you want to combine country beaches, Vendicari, Marzamemi or several Baroque towns on your own timetable. The sensible compromise is often to stay car-free while sightseeing in Syracuse, then collect a car only for the days outside the city. Compare hire cars in Syracuse if that is your plan. If you want Noto, Modica and Ragusa in one day without driving, the linked day tour is the cleaner alternative.

What works without a car

Ortigia rewards walking: its lanes are compact, parking interrupts the day, and part of the island is a camera-controlled limited-traffic zone. Neapolis is outside Ortigia but still belongs to an urban sightseeing day. A couple staying centrally can therefore spend several days without paying for a vehicle that mostly sits parked.

Noto is the easiest independent excursion by public transport. The trade-off is fixed departure times and the walk between the station and the historic centre. Combining Noto with Modica and Ragusa by public transport is much less practical; check the timetables before counting on it.

When a car earns its place

A car changes the answer when the destination is dispersed rather than difficult: Vendicari’s reserve entrances, Marzamemi, beaches south of Syracuse and accommodation in the countryside. It also suits travellers who prefer one long lunch or an unscheduled swim to a fixed group itinerary. Families carrying child equipment may value the boot, but must request the correct child seat in advance and confirm its cost with the rental company.

Do not collect a car simply to drive into Ortigia. The municipality identifies video-controlled ZTL gates, and access rules can change by time and authorisation. Molo Sant’Antonio and Talete are recognised parking areas near the island; check current signs, access and tariffs when you arrive rather than treating either as guaranteed space.

The no-driving alternative for the Baroque towns

The Car/Van Tour to Noto, Ragusa and Modica costs €101.50 per person, lasts 8 hours and is rated 4.7 from 263 reviews. It is the stronger choice for a solo traveller or couple who wants all three towns without parking or navigation. A hire car makes more sense when pace and detours matter more than having the logistics handled.

A practical decision

Stay car-free if your trip is centred on Ortigia, Neapolis and one straightforward day trip. Hire for selected days if your accommodation is rural or your plans include reserves and several small towns. Cruise visitors gain little from collecting and returning a car during a short call. Before paying, compare the fuel policy, deposit, excess, mileage and opening hours of the actual desk, not just the headline price.

For most city breaks: no car in Syracuse, then a short rental for the countryside. For three Baroque towns in one day: book the van tour.
