Car hire in Syracuse: what do excess, deposit and desk charges mean?

Updated October 23, 2026 · 5 min read

A car key and rental paperwork resting on a dark counter

Compare the total terms, not the cheapest first screen. The three lines that matter most are the excess you remain liable for, the deposit blocked at collection and the fuel policy. Compare Syracuse car-hire offers, then open the rental conditions for the specific car and supplier. There is no honest universal deposit or young-driver fee: both vary, so confirm the displayed amount and accepted payment card before booking.

Excess is not the deposit

The excess is the maximum amount for which the contract may leave you responsible after covered damage. The deposit is the amount the desk may block on a payment card while you have the car. They can be different. A low rental price does not tell you either figure.

CDW limits liability for specified collision damage, but it is not a promise that every tyre, glass, underbody, key or towing claim is covered. Read the exclusions. If a broker sells separate protection, establish whether the rental desk reduces its own deposit or whether you would first pay the supplier and later claim reimbursement.

What the desk may ask for

Rental companies in Italy generally request identification, a valid licence and a credit card in the driver’s name. Non-EU licences may also require an international driving permit or an official translation. The supplier’s own conditions decide the final requirement, so a debit card accepted online is not proof that the desk will release the vehicle.

Additional-driver, child-seat, one-way and age-related charges may apply. Also check the age limits and how long the licence must have been held. Do not infer your fee from another company’s policy: take a screenshot of the conditions attached to your reservation and bring the same named card.

Fuel and return

“Full to full” normally means collecting with a full tank and returning it full; keep the final fuel receipt. Other policies can include prepaid fuel or service charges. Check permitted mileage, late-return rules and the exact return location, especially if collecting in Syracuse and returning at Catania Airport.

Photograph every panel, wheel, the windscreen, fuel gauge and mileage before leaving. Ask staff to record existing marks. At return, obtain a closed agreement or other proof of the car’s condition where possible. These steps do not change the contract, but they make a later disagreement easier to document.

Before you press pay

Check, in this order: driver and card requirements; deposit; excess and exclusions; fuel; mileage; additional drivers; age conditions; child equipment; collection and return hours. Ortigia’s ZTL is a separate issue: rental insurance does not turn a restricted entry into an authorised one.

For most renters, the best offer is the one whose deposit, excess and card rules you can actually meet – not the smallest headline number. Compare the detailed Syracuse conditions before choosing.
